HDTV is growing in popularity in the United States, Canada, Japan and Australia. The main benefits of HDTV over standard definition include multi-channel audio, increased picture resolution and a 16:9 widescreen standard aspect. The benefits greatly influence the sound and picture quality of DISH HD. HDTV features a picture that is six times clearer than a standard definition broadcast. It makes watching sports and action movies look lifelike. The sharper the picture and lines, the higher the definition available on the television. Regular television contains 480 lines of definition while HTDV contains 1080 lines of definition. Standard definition is constantly refreshing to get a clear picture. HDTV never has to refresh which produces a sharper picture.

Editor's Note

The main difference between standard definition is the difference between the aspect ratios. Standard definition television sets are square and features a 4:3 aspect ratio. HDTV sets are manufactured in a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio. This allows the user to view more of the movie scene. Many people prefer watching movies at home rather than at the theater. Not only has the picture quality improved over the years but the sound quality has also improved. DISH HD features Dolby Digital Standard which is the standard for surround sound. Surround sound is a high definition sound that is broadcaster over multiple speakers that are placed throughout a room.

DISH HD is available to new and current customers of DISH Network. They provide free HD equipment to new users and for a small fee, will upgrade equipment for current users. Upgraded equipment, including an HD receiver is required to view HD programming. There are two types of receivers that DISH offers. A standard HD receiver that can be used to broadcast standard and HD programming in Dolby Digital Surround Sound. The second option is a HD DVR receiver. This receiver can broadcast both standard and HD programming just as the standard receiver but it can also record programming. DISH Network will provide free professional installation for new users.
